U.S. Copyright Office Announces Webinar on the Eighth Triennial Section 1201 Rulemaking

The Copyright Office will host a webinar on June 23, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. eastern time on the Office’s upcoming section 1201 rulemaking under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
Section 1201 is a provision of U.S. copyright law that prohibits circumvention of technological protection measures used by or on behalf of copyright owners to control access to their works. For example, section 1201 generally makes it unlawful to decrypt a DVD to access a copyrighted motion picture on an unauthorized device or to bypass a password control system to access a subscription video streaming service. The Office’s section 1201 rulemaking allows members of the public to petition for temporary exemptions to this general circumvention prohibition.
The webinar will provide an overview of section 1201 and the rulemaking process for establishing temporary exemptions. It will also discuss the existing temporary exemptions and the process for seeking renewal of those provisions. Following the presentation, Copyright Office staff will answer participants’ questions about the rulemaking process.
