Copyright Office Announces Study to Evaluate the Current Electronic Deposit and Best Edition Rules

Issue No. 967 - June 3, 2022

The U.S. Copyright Office has published a Federal Register notice announcing a study to evaluate the current electronic deposit and best edition rules that govern deposits accompanying copyright registration and mandatory deposits for the benefit of the Library of Congress. The study will examine the connection between these two types of deposits, the effect that the best edition requirement has on registration, and the expanding role of electronic deposits in building the Library’s collections. The study will also address the impact any changes to the current system would have on registrants, the registration system, and the Library’s ability to grow its collections. To assist the Office in conducting the study, the notice requests written comments from the public.
